In the construction industry the choice of materials is one of the most important aspects when it comes to sustainability and environmentally friendly construction.  Environmental consciousness is at the heart of KEIM Mineral Paints, both in terms of the products we produce as well as our impact on our environment as a company.  

KEIM Mineral Paints contain only natural raw materials and generally do not contain any ingredients such as solvents, plasticisers, biocides or preservatives which could be emitted into the ambient environment – this means they are safe for both the people using them and the environment around us.

Exceptional Longlife Protection & Decoration -

The durability and performance of KEIM Mineral Paints ensures that they are the sustainable material choice as they lessen the impact and necessity of repeated applications. 


Redecorating -

The redecoration of conventional masonry painted surfaces requires the partial and/or total removal of existing paint finishes to achieve satisfactory future performance.  This can be a costly process that also involves waste handling and removal.  KEIM forms a microcrystalline bond with the substrate and becomes part of it, not requiring removal before any subsequent redecoration.  It is only necessary to wash down  surfaces painted with KEIM before redecoration thereby saving time, money and eliminating waste.


Reduced Re-Painting Cycles -

An independent survey by Solway & District Housing Association (Formerly Allerdale DC) compared KEIM Granital with both quality and low cost masonry paint systems applied onto unpainted and previously painted surfaces over a 30 year projected period.

Over this 30 year timescale KEIM Granital would require 2 decorations requiring a total of 3 coats compared to 3 decorations and 7 coats for the quality masonry paint and 10 decorations and 11 coats for the low cost system.  The KEIM system provides the most economical long term solution.


Low Carbon Dioxide in Manufacture -

In 1996 an independent survey was conducted by Trischler & Partners, Freiburg, Germany comparing silicate paints (KEIM) with conventional acrylic dispersion systems (masonry paints).  Copies of the reports (German) are available on request and relevant extracts are as follows:

The study considered the external decoration of a dwelling (200m² surface area) over a 50 year period and compared a silicate paint system with an acrylic dispersion paint.

The individual systems were assessed from raw materials through to redecoration examining energy consumption, emissions, waste water, general waste and carbon dioxide emissions.

Breathable – Drier Substrates Require Less Heat Energy -

The microcrystalline structure of KEIM acts as a semi-permeable, breathable coating.  It allows water vapour to breathe out of the substrate but prevents the ingress of driven rain.  A solid masonry wall decorated with KEIM will therefore have gradually reducing moisture content.

When considering the energy required heating the internal volume of a structure a moisture laden wall will require more energy to reach an ambient temperature than a dry one.  Through the use of a semi-permeable coating the heat energy of the building in question can be reduced.


Improved Light Reflectance -

The light reflectivity of KEIM is higher than conventional film forming paints when compared identical colour shades because of the microcrystalline structure.  In practical terms this means a KEIM painted building appears bright and vibrant even on dull overcast days.  However there is also a financial benefit to be gained from this improved light reflectance.

In the early 1990’s Kent County Council assessed KEIM for the internal decoration of the new A20 Folkestone twin bore tunnel. One aspect of their investigation entailed the determination of the lighting levels within the tunnel.  Using KEIM’s superior light reflectivity they were able to reduce the lighting levels compared to those required for organic film forming coatings that were also being considered.  Engineers calculated that the energy savings over a 30 years period through the specification of KEIM would be equivalent to the initial cost of decorating the tunnel.

A similar exercise, verified by on-site lighting trials, was carried out by Hopkins Architects for the Inland Revenue Headquarters in Nottingham which resulted in 30,000m² of internal surfaces being decorated with KEIM.


Solvent Free – Manufacture & Use -

Mineral Silicate paints are waterborne, solvent free and have low VOC content.

In order to ensure that all KEIM’s products and associated processes have the minimum impact on the environment our parent company organisation has established and applies an environmental management system in accordance with the requirements of ISO 14001:1996 (certificate registration No. 12 100/1047631 TMS)

The aforementioned report by Trischler & Partners also assessed the amount of solvent used on the trial building:
