House in Betchworth, Surrey - Proven Longevity and Colour Stability of Keim
This property is a Grade II* listed building and one of the largest buildings in the village of Betchworth. Built by the Lord of the Manor in 1675 it has only ever changed hands twice, by purchase.
In 1991 the owners contacted Keim about using the most durable and long life paint finish available and developing the perfect bespoke colour effect for the external decoration. Our Senior Colourist, Nicola Young visited the property, where she was given a leaf from the ‘Magnolia Floribunda’ and asked to match the mottled tones and colour effect.
Developing a mottled effect involves using a base colour in an opaque paint, such as Keim Granital and over laying this with a coat, or coats, of Keim Restauro Lasur. The opaque shade creates a solid base, matched to the most prevalent colour within the sample, in this case the magnolia leaf. Highlight shades are then picked out from other colours present in the sample. These colours are then mixed in a translucent effect, using a clear binder, and then applied in a random fashion to create a natural effect, not an obvious paint finish.
The variation in the effect is quite subtle at Betchworth House and used a single coat of Keim Restauro Lasur over the base coat to give a natural finish.
The materials were purchased in 1991, and all these photographs of the project have been taken recently (Sept 2014).
The coating has performed extremely well over the last 23 years, in fact one of the most striking things about the coating is how the colour has remained complete UV stable and has not faded. During our recent visit, Nicola mixed the original colour and coated some boards for comparison and there is no visible difference between the new and the original finish.
It might take you a minute to see the boards -
Betchworth House is a beautiful building and an excellent example of a natural effect and longevity of a Keim Finish.
Keim offer this type of technique on many different projects to replicate natural stone and limewash type finishes, and can, within reason, replicate most effects. Below are some examples of some other interesting lasur matches/site trials:
